Case Study – To demonstrate the impact of Incentive Funding & Training In 2017

Central Roofers Ltd has recently been accepted into membership of the National Federation of Roofing Contractors and the North West Roof Training Group. In support of steps to business growth, the Management has shown a willingness to embrace the NFRC Code of Practice and also, to accept the need for training, both as a legal requirement and to improve the business generally.

The Company is based in Trafford Park, Manchester, and operate their business in both the commercial and domestic roofing market. Incorporated in 2013, they work both regionally and nationally as both a Main Contractor and also as a Sub-Contractor. Their primary roofing disciplines are slating, tiling, built up felt roofing and liquid applied coatings.

Central Roofers objectives are to provide a high quality, safe and cost effective roofing service to all clients and to create an environment of continual learning, improvement and development to ensure that staff consistently work to the high standards required in today’s roofing industry.

Success is measured mainly from recommendations and repeat business.

The Company currently employ a small directly employed team of operatives and use sub-contractors when required. Operatives are supported by a small team of support staff to include a Surveyor and a Works Controller.

The Company registered with CITB in 2013 and over the initial period a limited amount of training took place in basic Health & Safety requirements.

In late 2016, the company was made aware of the availability of incentive funding via the NFRC and North West Roof Training Group, which enabled training to take place from January 2017 for all employees involved in the roofing process. Had this funding not been available, Central Roofers would not have been able to undertake this training which has provided existing staff with the skills to carry out more complex activities

In addition to the benefits referred to above, the employees enjoyed their training, which the Management acknowledge has resulted in good team morale.

All roofing operatives are now trained in a number of key areas and Managers and Supervisors have completed Site Management Safety Training and Site Supervisors Safety Training Scheme Courses ensuring consistency and compliance with both HSE regulations and client site requirements.

In summary, training has been tailored to support the strategic plan for business growth, and the incentive funding granted in the early months of 2017 has provided the finance for this purpose which in turn has created a highly motivated workforce. Central Roofers has recently been awarded a lucrative contract at nearby Manchester Airport, proof indeed, that time invested in training has given them a competitive edge.
